Spün 365 - Day 1: The Beginning
Today marks the first day of Spün 365.
For the next 365 days, I’m building Spün in public — one day at a time.
The goal isn’t simply to launch a website or release a couple of products. I want to build the infrastructure, products, systems, documentation, identity, and ecosystem that will eventually make Spün feel like a real technology company rather than an idea sitting in my head.
The destination is September 1, 2027.
But today, I started with something much simpler: getting the foundations in order.
Starting with the infrastructure
One of the biggest things on my plate was the Spün Media API.
When i started building the API, i thought I’d just keep it closed. Consumers would only see what i wanted them to see, buh eventually i realised that if i want to build trust, keeping projects closed wasn’t going to cut it. What’s the point of saying I’m building in public if i can’t share what I’m building.
So, i open sourced it under MIT. It’s fully functional, you can check it out yourself here on GitHub. As for the full documentation, I’m still working on it.
One decision I made was users shouldn’t just visit the docs page and see a long list of endpoints, that’ll be boring. Instead i decided to make it better.
I want to build a live documentation page for the API where consumers don’t just see an endpoint, they get to test it in real-time, see live responses and decide for themselves if it’s worth building on.
That’s a small distinction, but it’s part of a bigger idea I’m trying to follow with Spün:
Everything should have a clear purpose.
The documentation will be complete and live when the API is ready to host users, till then if you want to use it, you can simply self-host it.
Building the Spün presence
I also worked on Spün’s GitHub presence and the visual identity surrounding it.
I transferred a couple of projects from my personal GitHub to Spün’s official one. Most of which are public, the ones that are currently private are still in development.
I also continued working on making Spün discoverable through search.
That’s going to matter more and more as the ecosystem grows. If I’m going to spend a year building useful things under the Spün name, people eventually need to be able to find those things.
One day down
There isn’t a massive product launch to announce today.
And that’s okay.
Spün 365 isn’t about pretending that every day is a launch day.
Some days will involve building. Some will involve debugging. Some will involve documentation. Some will probably involve staring at an error message for three hours and questioning every life decision that led me there 🥲.
The point is to keep moving.
Today was about putting the first pieces in place.
There’s 364 days remaining, I hope you tag along for it.
